Have you met Miranda? I should like to introduce you to her.
I met Miranda this summer while on the Outer Banks. Her introduction came by way of Mr. Shakespeare. He created her name for her, from the Latin mirandus, which means "one worthy of admiration and respect." Yet she is only fifteen.
When she was only three years old, Miranda was shipwrecked on an island peopled only by herself and her father the Duke of Milan, Prospero.
Though betrayed, abandoned, and pursued by the monster Caliban, Miranda emerged as a compassionate teenager.
- O, I have suffered
With those that I saw suffer! a brave vessel,
Who had no doubt some noble creature in her,
Dashed all to pieces! O, the cry did knock
- Against my very heart.
I like think it had to do with good parenting.
Perhaps you have not met Miranda, but you have heard her words upon seeing men (other than her father) for the first time in her young life.
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is!
O brave new world! That has such people in it!
