It's been three weeks since we left our summer cottage at the beach, and i ache to be there again. While inland, i spend too much time indoors and too much time away from the ever present sound and sight of a heaving sea.
One time, i overheard my father murmur how strange it was that people stood by the edge of the water and stared. It was true. Even then, as we spoke, we had long been aware of a man in swim trunks and t-shirt who stood at the shoreline, his head slowly oscillating as he gazed at the rimless miles of open water. He had reached the end of his journey; he had reached the end of land. Before him and to either side stretched a muscular strenghth so vast that even on a calm day, the man could be shaken to death in seconds like a rag doll by a simple flex of its currents.
"I think we come face to face with just how little we really are. And just how big God must be," i said softly.
"There's eternity in the sea."
"And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal. . ."
When i come back to the woods, there is a desolation in me that comes from being removed from a spiritual connection i feel (all of us feel?) to the sea. i, like the man in swim trunks and t-shirt, have logged long hours at land's end, gazing as wave after wave rolled in, left it still rolling in, woke in the night to find it even then bouncing heavily against the shore.
The sea speaks to me of the eternal.
Rob Tennant at "Honest Talk With God" stirred my thoughts in his post on "The Crystal Sea - Revelation 4:6" (My simple thoughts follow; Rob's superior teaching may be found by clicking here.)
In the beginning, God's Spirit hovered over the waters.
On the first day of Creation, God created the firmament which separated the waters above from the waters below.
God's throne sits upon a crystal sea (the waters above?). . .a sea smooth as glass because there is no moon to draw its tides or wind to ruffle its surface or trembling planet in orbit to cause it to heave. (This last thought from Beth Moore, session 4 of her Revelation study).
And into that sea, bottomless depth, He has cast all my sin.
In the New Heaven and New Earth, the sea will be no more.
Is it perhaps because what the sea has represented spiritually on earth will be an actuality Heaven?
". . .and there was a rainbow about the throne. . .and before the throne was a sea of glass like unto crystal. . ."
~Revelation 4: 3, 6
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men. . .
~Revelation 21: 3 - 4
Oh, Beloved, i must to the sea again. . .to remember what is to come. . .
