Lori and i sat down to visit for a bit before she went back to study.
And something that weighs heavily on both of us surfaced in what was supposed to be a quiet, happy talk.
She is articulate, my Lori. Smart. She called this over five years ago, when she was only eighteen. This place we are today. And the discussion broke me down to tears as i saw the anger and frustration wind tightly through her young face and voice. The world is different for her than it was for me when i was her age. She has debts i never knew. Bright. High achiever. She has trouble finding a job.
My girls. I taught them to vote. I carried them to the polls every year from the time they were babies so they could see their Mama vote.
My darling girls, never take your right to vote for granted, i whispered to them over the years. Never.
It's getting harder each year to tell them why.
When the House purposefully passes a bill for providing tax breaks for our men and women in the military, so that the Senate can gut it, and insert a health care bill that half of the country would not vote for if given the chance.
When congressmen and women circumvent the constitution and pass laws to which they are immune.
When a revolution was fought in 1774 over a two percent tax on tea, and today, food tax is 10% and the money that a man or woman earns is taxed over and over and over. . .from the moment it goes home in a pay check to each and every purchase it makes and again and again, taxed repeatedly year after year on objects purchased years before. . .a car, a pet, land. . .
When the false god of Canaan molech still demands the sacrifice of children, and we call it Pro-Choice. Although the freedom of choice was made in the act that brought the child to life, not in the freedom to end that life.
When the government shuts down for weeks and neighbors' cars are still in the driveway come Monday morning, and a soldier lays down his life and a law has to be passed to make sure his family will be paid. When the leader of the free world ungraciously chastises members of the other party after their defeat. When people lose their insurance after promises made that they never will, and glitches in a web site heave us up before the world ridiculed. And tax money is sent to other nations to provide for abortion clinics. And the Secretary of State refuses to send help to an ambassador in a foreign country, and when she is brought before the Senate committee to defend her actions, her very judges praise her and spend fulsome compliments and offer best wishes to see her again in 2014.
i'm telling you, we wept.
On November 7th, i will pull my daughters close to listen to Mr. Graham; i believe this Old Evangelist has something very much worth listening to. . .
"I've recently prepared what may well be my last message to our nation. I have prayed a great deal about this. . .With my whole heart I want to leave you with truth. . ." ~ Billy Graham
Will you be there, Beloved? Will you pray for our nation? Will you invite someone who needs to hear these words into your home to listen with you?
Let me know. You are my Best Hearts, and i need your encouragement today.
